Growing With The Church

As the needs of our members have changed, the program Catholic Mutual provides has evolved as well. In the 1960s, Casualty (Liability) coverage was added to our program. In the years 1987 and 1989, due to a response to a substantial hardening of the insurance market, Catholic Mutual, with a large number of dioceses, created Catholic Umbrella Pool (CUP) and Catholic Umbrella Pool II (CUP II), excess liability pools that provide participating members ownership, dividends and more stable costs. As a result of CUP and CUP II, Catholic Mutual members are not subject to the volatility of the commercial retail marketplace.

In 1998, we developed a program to assist members in obtaining affordable employee benefit plans for entities of the Catholic Church: the Employee Benefit Buying Alliance (EBBA). In recent years, we have also adapted coverage plans to assist with unforeseen natural occurrences, and to address challenges brought on by the sexual misconduct crisis.

We Share Your Mission

As a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit that is part of the Catholic Church, we serve only Church-owned institutions and have no obligations to stockholders or a profit motive, only to the needs and mission of the Church. Our Board of Trustees consists exclusively of cardinals, archbishops and bishops.

We are proud to mark our 125th anniversary in 2014 and we look forward to continuing our tradition of service to the Catholic Church for many years to come.

We Share Your Values

It is our job to provide a stable environment for all our members, but it is our vocation to ensure that, in times of crisis, our members are made whole.

As part of the Catholic Church, we understand that the environment we work in, serving the Church, requires a different approach than any other industry. Rather than taking a cookie-cutter approach to your program, we work with each member organization to assess their unique needs, while respecting church doctrine and traditions.

Occasionally, there have been situations where losses were not covered and our member is unable to recover without suffering severe financial hardship.  In a few select situations such as this, Catholic Mutual has agreed to make “relief payments” to the member. In the last 10 years, more than $6 million has been paid to various members.

Whether it’s a single monstrance or an entire cathedral, we understand the value, both temporal and ecclesiastical, of what we cover.
